Hórreos of Navarra

Basque country with the flowery houses

House so important in the culture of this people

The top of the door is decorated with a blazon, with often the name of the owner - of the family- and the date of construction

If the Basque country knew hórreos, only a small number ( 22 ) remains today, most concentrated in some villages of the mountains of Navarra,
no far from the collar of Roncesvalles.

The hórreo of Navarra is a small construction of masonry with a roof in 2 pronounced hillsides, today covered with tiles, with slate or with sheet steels. Except sometimes a small attic window in cog, it has no aeration.

Reshaped in the past decades, sometimes with the walled up bottom, hórreos seems today unusual in the centre of villages, little used and not enough importance in the Basque culture.
