Os Encarres

In the Southwest of Cordillera Cantábrica, the sierra de los Encarres marks separation between the provinces of Galicia and Castilla y León.

For a long time isolated with the rest of Spain and folded up on itself, this mountainous region developed in its villages an original architecture of straw of which hórreos is one of the elements.

With their square shape and their pyramidal roof, these granaries are similar to those of Asturies. Their important vegetable coverage gives them a round aspect and make their originality.

The culture of the rye in strong regression lead to impossibility to be renewed the coverage of hórreos as originally. Some degrade and will desappear. Coverages of replacement are used to preserve them: the slate (which covers also houses) or the corrugated iron.

But sometimes hórreos with coverage of thatch is renewed or built
