Hórreos of Asturias

The hórreo of asturias is the most succeeded in the granaries of Spain, a work of quite wooden carpenter assembled without any nail, only in tongues, grooves and ankles.

It is also the most aesthetic and harmonious shape of the granaries which one can see. It is only in this province where it abounds, and in some zones of the borders.

Three characters distinguish it from every others: a squared plan, a body of granary made of vertical boards, a pyramidal roof with 4 hillsides. Position or materials of pillars, those of the roof and other details can vary according to zones; the addition of a gallery, evolution engendered by the intensive farming of the corn, gives him a supplementary beauty. .

A specific study about the hórreo of Asturias is made in other part, this page and the following one constitute only a complement.

In the occidental zone of Asturias a gallery surrounds the granary with boards to protect it from the rain on a side or on some.

The pillars of small size are raised on walls forming an enclosure or a room. Sometimes hórreos are placed at the top of a house: the stair is then internal.

In the mountainous zones, the slate is used to cover the roof

A small zone of the Southwest preserved some hórreos with a vegetable coverage

to replace every 5 in 15 years. This type is so in process of disappearance

Without gallery with feet of wood put on stones
