With the ASTURIES, GALICIA is the other homeland of hórreos One finds them distributed in all the province, rare in certain zones and abundant in the others. However Galicia's hórreos are different from that of Asturies. The plan is oblong, of 1,5 m in 2 m of width and variable length. The roof is two hillsides. It rests on stony pillars surmounted with a flat stone as protection of the rodents, either on the walls of a small room. The body of the granary can be everything of wood, everything of stone (except the door), either constituted by a stone structure and a wooden completion (hórreos mixed). Nowadays, the hollow brick often replaced the wood in these granaries. Different materials cover the roof generally decorated with a finial in every extremity. The other peculiarity: Galice's hórreo favors the ventilation of its contents. It seems in fact specific in the stocking of the corn, cereal harvested late in the season and asking for a supplementary drying for the conservation. Especially in these rather wet Atlantic regions. |
